Pa Isaac O. Oyeyemi
BIOGRAPHY
Engr. Isaac Olayanju Oyeyemi was born on the 30th of June 1939, in Plateau State, Jos, to his loving parents, Amos Akanbi and Efunleye Abeni Oyeyemi, from Ile Are Ago Oyawe, Oke-elerin of Ogbomoso North, Oyo State, and was the fourth child out of seven. Among his siblings, he is survived by Lydia, Nathaniel, Victoria, David, Moses. He was a devoted family man who left behind a legacy of love through his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family.
Education
Isaac Olayanju Oyeyemi began his education in Jos, where he attended primary school and then proceeded to Plateau Provincial Secondary School, Kuru, Jos,in 1955 where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1961. His thirst for knowledge led him to the Polytechnic of North London (now London Metropolitan University), where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering, 1979 to 1982.
Career and Achievements
Isaac Olayanju Oyeyemi’s professional career began in 1961 when he joined the Federal Public Service Commission in Lagos as a Third-Class Clerk.
He later moved to Post and Telecommunications (P&T) Nigeria Limited in Oshodi, Lagos, where he trained as a Technician in Elementary Telecommunications Practice from 1964 to 1966 and was subsequently promoted to Technical Officer in April of 1973, and then promoted to Senior Technical Officer in April 1976 which was the post he held before going to the UK in 1979 for further studies.
He returned to P&T/NET in 1982 after completing his studies in the UK, where he rose through the ranks with numerous promotions to the level of Senior Manager before his retirement:
- January 1, 1981: Promoted to PTO 1
- October 1, 1982: Converted to Principal Engineer
- June 1, 1985: Promoted to Assistant Manager (Transmission Systems Opts & Maintenance)
- November 10, 1994: Promoted to Senior Manager Engineer
When P&T and NET merged to form NITEL, He played a significant role in the merger process and retired as Senior Manager (Maintenance) on September 1, 1999, after 35 years of dedicated service.
While in active service, he was inducted into the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) on 9th of July, 1989.
Life After Retirement
Upon retirement Daddy put to practice his entrepreneur skills, successfully managing multiple fish farms which provided sustainable produce and employment opportunities. His commitment to excellence was evident in his business endeavours.
Family Life
In April 1971 at the Baptist Church in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, he married his beloved wife, Mrs. Comfort M. Oyeyemi and they are blessed with four beautiful daughters, Abimbola, Olaitan, Oluwabunmi and Oluwaseyi, who are all doing well..
A devoted family man, Daddy prioritized education and spending quality time with his children and later, his grandchildren. He also imbibed a happy, jovial “everything will be alright, trust God” spirit into his kids, often teaching the kids songs and having a good laugh.
He taught his kids to be disciplined and independent. He carried this on to his grandchildren, Teni, Lois, Roli, Jessica. In 2019, he visited the UK during which time he bonded with his family in the UK, did some sight-seeing, had a lot of laughs, and played with his grandchildren. He absolutely loved helping his grandchildren with their homework as well.
Community and Church Life
As a devout Christian, daddy was a member of Baptist Church Onitiri, Yaba, Lagos and upon relocation to Idimu, Lagos, moved to Shalom Baptist Church, Akowonjo, and actively participated in the Men’s Missionary Union (MMU). He also had strong ties to the Ogbomosho Socialite Club, reflecting his deep connection to his roots.
Languages and Personality
Fluent in Yoruba, English, and Hausa, He had a remarkable ability to connect with people from different backgrounds. He often engaged tradesmen and artisans in their native Hausa language, forming instant camaraderie and often securing favourable bargains. He was known for his humor, kindness, and resourcefulness at every turn.
He had a love for DIY and Music, this was evident in the number of projects he took on. He tried to accomplish tasks himself wherever possible. He also had a great musical collection, and he was a movie buff; his children benefited from this via the recordings he had made of beloved classic movies and documentaries.
He ensured his children were grounded in the Lord, making sure they were always in church.
Legacy
Engr I. O Oyeyemi’s life was a testament of hard work, family devotion, and a deep love for his community. He left an indelible mark on all who knew him and will be fondly remembered.
He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews.
